Then you shop some more and can’t find anything whithin reach. Every supplier of date palms may be too expensive. You then decide that date palms are just plain expensive. So you decide to grow one from from seed. How much easier can it get ? You by some medjool dates eat the delicious fruit and take the seed in the center of the date and plant it. It is that easy. The bad news is that you might have to wait 10,14, 17 years before you see any fruit on the date palm. Even worse, it might be a male. The male will not produce dates. Fourteen years later you might find out you lucked out and it looks like your date palm is going to produce delicious medjool dates. Then you wait and discover that your date palm is not producing any dates. You wonder why, after all you live in a nice coastal area with lots of palms. The problem is that dates do not grow in that type of climate. You might live in a dry hot place and your date palm might actually look like it is going to produce dates. Then you find that these dates are very inferior and look nothing like medjool dates. You then look at your 100 other date palms and discover the same is true of the other 100 date palms. None of the date palms look like medjool dates. The reason is that for the dates to be consistenly the same they have to be off shoots from the date palm. They cannot be from seed. If you grown from seed you don’t know what you will get. There are an awful lot of factors that determine what if any dates you will grow.
