If you know what a medjool date is there must have been a point in time when you came across this fruit and wondered why you had never heard about it.  The medjool date and dates in general are not well know throughout the United States.  There are lots of other lesser known fruits and vegetables that are not only unique, but fantastic in flavor.
When you first tried a date you may have been apprehensive, but then discovered that the flavor and texture was excellent.  Then when you attempted to purchase medjool dates you may have been in for a negative surprise.  Medjool dates are not cheap and it is for good reason.  Medjool dates require a lot of labor.  From beginning to end the medjool date demands a lot of attention.  The medjool date palm itself also requires a lot of attention.
After experiencing sticker shock you may decided that you would rather grow a medjool date in your backyard and pick your own free medjool dates in a matter of a couple of years.   This may seem a like a simple solution, but in fact it is very complicated to grow medjool dates.  For one thing date palm trees require a special climate.  You cannot grow medjools everywhere.  There are many places where they can grow, but generally speaking these places are not where people like to live.  The medjool date grows best in the desert.  This fantastic dessert grows best in the desert.  Unlike a coconut tree which grows well on the coast a medjool date palm will grow well, but produce little or no fruit.  The fruit it does produce will be of low quality if at all.  The price of the medjool is high for a reason, it is simply too expensive to grow medjool dates.  It takes a lot of TLC and lot of back breaking work to grow these fruits.
