You would think that the ideal place to grow medjool dates or any other type of date for that matter would be a warm tropical area where other palms grow, but that is not the case. The ideal place to grow dates is in hot dessert conditions. The other criteria is that a lot of water is required. Another reason for why the medjool date costs a lot to grow. Now only do you require a dessert, but paradoxically you require a lot of water. The water has to be at the roots. The medjool date palm would grow just fine in Florida, but the fruit would not do well. The moisture from rain and in the air would keep the fruit from developing. You may be able to get some dates, but it would not be commercially feasible to grow dates in Florida or comparable climates.
