On my way to the airport to return my esteem colleague I saw date palms everywhere. Trees are much more common than date palms, but there were a lot of date palms. I am not entirely certain as to the reason why architects and designers choose to specify date palms. What comes to mind is the fact that date palms are very low maintenance and relatively predictable in terms of how fast, tall, and wide they will grow. Last it occurred to me that date palms can grow for a very, very long time. A date palm can live for up to about 200 years. So with a long life expectancy and low maintenance requirements a date palm should be a very good investment. It makes a lot of sense why date palms are so popular. I don’t advocate that only date palms be specified, though. I would not encourage an increase in the use of date palms. I do enjoy looking at the variety of vegetation and it if became too much of one type it would just not be the same. It simply would not be as attractive as it is now. A lot of the aesthetics from the fact that you can contrast by height, color, shape, and other objective characteristics.
