Dates For The Holidays

December 15th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

It is odd to think of medjool dates or any other dates for that matter as part of the holidays, but dates are very popular during the holidays.  Dates are harvested in fall, which in the desert feels like summer, and are widely available in the winter.  It is not uncommon to gift medjool dates, especially medjool dates during the holidays.  Medjool dates are premium dates and very appropriate for those you care about.  Not much different than a fruit basket, except medjool dates are still a relatively exotic fruit, despite the fact that the 100 year anniversary for dates is coming up.  It has been almost 100 years since dates were first introduced to California.  The medjool date was a introduced a little later than the Deglet Noor, and date fruit was available until several years later, but still almost 100 years and we still find the fruit to be exotic and not well known throughout the country.  Not only is the medjool date a sweet treat, but it is also still a relatively unique exotic fruit, that most people find to be so delicious that it can become addictive.
