As I arrived at the post office the first thing I noticed was a line of cars waiting for a parking space. Fortunately two persons left and I got a space. The parking lot was full, no so lucky for the people coming after me. It was 2 pm. I believed it would be a perfect time, but I was wrong. There is no perfect time this time of year to ship stuff out. As I approached the post office building there was the guy in the red outfit ringing a bell hoping for people to make donations. The money goes to the salvation army where countless people are employed in administrative jobs and the homeless get a helping hand as well bums. They do a lot of good and are often instrumental in removing junkies off the street. I entered the post office and I thought to myself “suckers.” I intended to go straight to the automated machine where you can ship anything out without having to wait in the long lines. To my surprise, there was long line at the automated machine with a postal worker helping them to ship stuff out. Why ? Does that not defeat the purpose of the automated machine ? Why not put the postal worker behind the counter ? Better yet, why not put half a dozen machines and with that one worker. That would be so much more efficient. In any case there were a lot of packages going out and a lot of people buying stamps. I am sure a few of the many boxes the people were carrying were dates, probably not medjool dates, since you don’t ship stuff out to your very best family members, you go see them and hang out with them for the holidays. You would hand deliver medjool dates, especially since these dates are so much more fragile. I only mention the dates, because it is all about the dates here, but really it is the traffic that draws my attention. At the end of the date I was not looking at the streets lined with date palms, I was looking at the unbelievable amount of traffic and all the lights and the glare I was a little confused, I couldn’t’ tell if traffic was coming going or stopped, it was a little scary, especially after hearing of a woman that got tossed out of her car after a rear end collision at a high rate of speed. I love the holidays, but this is insane. I say get your date boxes early on, get the kids gifts early on, and get you stuff wrapped and into the closet under the extra blankets early on, maybe in September. I wish I didn’t have to get back into that crazy environment of chaotic traffic, but still have to get to and from work. The date orchard seems so peaceful, but not a realistic option. It is once a year kind of deal, where you harvest your medjool date and you are done the bulk of the work and wait to the next year.
