Organic dates and many other produce means that no artificial fertilizers or pesticides where used to produce the dates or the particular fruit or vegetable. The requirement is that artificial chemicals not be used on the land for a period of three years. Three years of no use is all that is required to qualify as organic. Medjool dates for the most part are organic, sometimes by choice, sometimes unintentionally. The reason medjool dates are organic is that often no fertilizer is applied to the dates and pesticides are not common. Date palms do fine without pesticides. There are very natural pests that need to control and the biggest pest is birds which often take fruit from the medjool date palms. This controlled with netting around the dates. Almost all medjool dates are pesticide free because of the lack of pests attacking medjool date palms. Some farms use artificial fertilizers, but it is rare that pesticides are used on medjool date farms.
