Nothing as fun as rain. It cleans the streets, cleans the roofs, and makes trees look greener as the dust is washed off. Date fruit on the other hand does not fare as well, rain can ruin date fruit. It does not rain very often in deserts and it is not a very big concern. In fact many date farms are now using netting to cover the fruit instead of water resistant paper. Rain is very real risk to the production of the date fruit, but it is a tiny little risk that does not deter date farmers from using the netting to protect the fruit from bird and insects. Dates are predominately organic, because there is no need to spray dangerous chemicals to ward off disease or bugs. It does not mean there is no disease it just means it is rare. What prompted the export and propagation of medjool dates in the United States was disease. Disease was killing all the medjool date orchards so the US brought in some shoots and started the medjool date orchards in California.
