August is a holy month for one of the great religions of the world. Islam celebrates Ramadan during the month of August. Ramadan requires fasting during day time hours and the fast is often broken with a date. There is a special kind of date that is used to break the fast, but now a days the medjool date is often consumed. The date that is normally consumed for Ramadan is a date that is edible before it ripens. The date is still yellow and has not changed into the golden brown rippen dates are commonly known for. The Ramadan date is still firm, but edible. Other dates are bitter and not edible. Now a days it is more of a tradition, and dates are often put in storage and used the following year for Ramadan, so the true Ramadan date may not necessarily be the date that is eaten for Ramadan. The medjool date is not harvested until after Ramadan, so to consume a medjool date to break fast they would necessarily have to be from a previous harvest.
