Dates, Gators and Careers

I was watching the history channel and the gator hunters show came on.  Makes you wonder how it is that we end up with certain jobs and careers.  If I had been born in Louisiana I may have been a gator hunter, or a fisherman, or shrimper.   Our future lives are full of possibilities, but the fact is that we tend to do what we are exposed to.  We learn to do and learn about what our parents do.  Cultivating medjool dates is nice and tranquil lifestyle and if born into to family of date growers chances are you will be a date grower too.  I suppose the clincher is whether there are too many kids in the family, it is a lot harder to continue a family business if you have to share.  There are just not enough resources to accommodate a large family.  The business will not generate enough income, there may not be enough land, or maybe not enough palms.  The same is true for most other businesses.  I am not sure I would be able to go gator hunting and be at risk of being the huntee, but who knows.  If all you know is gator hunting and you grow up in family hunting environment you may think it is normal to go about hunting gators and putting your life on the line.  I think a lot of parents go out of their way to get their children to do something different and not do what they do, even so I think most parents are unsuccessful.  When parents succeed in getting their children to take a different direction, I am not sure that the children are successful, I would imagine there are many successful examples, but at the same time I would think there is a very high failure rate.   I have seen many children take different direction from their parents and coming back to their parents for help, because they failed in those unknown waters.  I think it is the reason why we need colleges, without them the next generation does not stand a chance.  I think we need to change our school system that children would be screened for those things they are particularly adept to at an early stage.  Sure we all want our children to be medical doctors, but the reality is that few of our children actually have the skills or desire to be medical doctors.
