Date palms, like any other palm or tree are valuable.  As trees get older it gets more difficult to move them and their availability declines.  With fewer of the particular item the price goes up.  Date palms are often specified by landscape architects for warm weather areas, because of their drought tolerance and lower maintenance.  A tree requires much more maintenance than a date palm.  The Medjool date palm in particular is a much more attractive date palm than date palms and its very low maintenance.  The date palms are expensive, but not much more expensive than a tree of comparable age.  The date palm grows much slower than a tree and this is where it gains an advantage on maintenance.  The tree will have lots of branches needing trimming in a matter of one growing season.  A date palm has no branches, it will always have the same predictable size palm leaves.   Heavy rain may cause the branches of a large tree to fall off, the date palm will not have such a problem and the same is true of strong winds.  A harsh summer may cause the tree to die out there is a problem with the irrigation, whereas the date palm may go on for several days without the need for water.  Date palms produce fruit while in an orchard and once a year medjool dates can be harvested and once the date palm is reaching a height that makes harvesting dangerous the date palm can be sold off.  This is not always the case some orchards have date palms that have been producing  medjool dates or deglet noor dates for about 100 years and the palms are reaching 100 feet, making the harvest relatively dangerous.

If you know what a medjool date is there must have been a point in time when you came across this fruit and wondered why you had never heard about it.  The medjool date and dates in general are not well know throughout the United States.  There are lots of other lesser known fruits and vegetables that are not only unique, but fantastic in flavor.
When you first tried a date you may have been apprehensive, but then discovered that the flavor and texture was excellent.  Then when you attempted to purchase medjool dates you may have been in for a negative surprise.  Medjool dates are not cheap and it is for good reason.  Medjool dates require a lot of labor.  From beginning to end the medjool date demands a lot of attention.  The medjool date palm itself also requires a lot of attention.
After experiencing sticker shock you may decided that you would rather grow a medjool date in your backyard and pick your own free medjool dates in a matter of a couple of years.   This may seem a like a simple solution, but in fact it is very complicated to grow medjool dates.  For one thing date palm trees require a special climate.  You cannot grow medjools everywhere.  There are many places where they can grow, but generally speaking these places are not where people like to live.  The medjool date grows best in the desert.  This fantastic dessert grows best in the desert.  Unlike a coconut tree which grows well on the coast a medjool date palm will grow well, but produce little or no fruit.  The fruit it does produce will be of low quality if at all.  The price of the medjool is high for a reason, it is simply too expensive to grow medjool dates.  It takes a lot of TLC and lot of back breaking work to grow these fruits.
